A worktop, not a dining table

The kitchen counter has different challenges than the table at which you eat.

The sink and dishwasher zone is the place where water and steam most often come into contact with the surface.

Cooking fat and food acids - lemon, vinegar, tomatoes - can discolor an unprotected countertop over time.

Cutting directly on the countertop (without a board) is one of the main causes of scratches in the kitchen.

The places that break down the fastest

Six typical risk zones in the kitchen.

  • Sink area

Most common contact with water and moisture.

  • Countertop near the stove

Risk of hot dishes and spilled oil.

  • Cutting place

Scratches from knives without a board.

  • Contact with food acids

Lemon, vinegar, tomatoes - discolor unprotected surfaces.

  • Countertop next to the dishwasher

Steam and moisture when opening the dishwasher.

  • Sunny place

Protection against discoloration from the sun.

Sink and dishwasher area

Water and steam most often come into contact with the countertop.

The mat retains water on the surface, so it will not have time to soak into the countertop under the sink.

In the dishwasher, it protects against condensation when opening after the cycle.

Food acids

Lemon, vinegar and tomatoes are common causes of discoloration.

Food acids react with unprotected varnish and may leave a permanent mark if they come into contact with the countertop for a long time.

The mat creates a layer between the food and the countertop, so the acid does not directly touch the surface.

What the mat cannot replace

Fair reservations for the kitchen.

Cutting boards

Cutting with a sharp knife straight onto the mat will scratch it anyway - you still need a board.

A stand for hot pots

It is better to place a very hot pot straight from the fire on a stand, not on a mat.

Systematic washing

The mat makes cleaning easier, but it will not replace regular washing of the countertop underneath it.

How to choose the size of a worktop

The kitchen countertop often has unusual, long proportions.

Worktops can be narrow and long - accurate measurement of width and length is more important here than on a dining table.

You will find step-by-step measurement instructions here.
