Which actually destroys the wooden countertop

The most common causes of damage that we see on wooden tables.

Spilled water, if left on the wood for a long time, lifts the fibers and leaves white streaks, especially on oiled finishes.

Hot dishes placed directly on the countertop may discolor the paint or leave a permanent ring.

Cutlery and knives scratch the surface during everyday cutting or serving - small scratches accumulate over time.

What destroys the countertop most often?

Six situations that the mat protects against.

  • Spilled water and drinks

The mat holds the liquid on the surface rather than allowing it to soak into the wood.

  • Hot dishes

Brief contact with a warm plate does not damage the finish under the mat.

  • Scratches from cutlery

    The mat absorbs everyday scratches.

  • Food acids (lemon, vinegar)

They have no contact with the wood when the mat is placed on it.

  • Discoloration from the sun

The mat does not block light, but reduces the contact of wood with spilled liquids near the window.

  • Daily use

Protection without changing the appearance of the table every day.

Wood finish matters

Lacquered, oiled and waxed countertops react differently.

Lacquered

Most resistant - the mat adds another layer of protection without the risk of reacting with the finish.

Oiled

Oil finishes are more sensitive to moisture trapped under the mat after prolonged contact.

Waxed

Like oil, wax can react to trapped moisture.

For lacquered finishes, the mat works without any reservations.

Disclaimer for oiled and waxed countertops

Be honest about what the seller usually doesn't say.

Oiled and waxed wood "breathes" - prolonged covering with a mat, especially in a humid environment, may in rare cases affect the finish.

If you have such a countertop and you are not sure, call us +48 45 104 05 40 — we will tell you how to use the mat safely on your finish.

In practice, most customers with oiled wood use the mat without any problem - it's common sense, not prohibition.

This provision does not apply to lacquered finishes.

Which thickness and finish to choose

For wood, 1.5 mm gloss is usually sufficient.

1.5 mm gloss works on most wooden countertops - €39.00/m², 2.0 mm gloss costs €43.00/m² and holds its shape better on large tables.

If the top is glass or very shiny, it may be a better choice matte finish. You can check the price for your size in calculator, and you will find measurement instructions here.
